Banish fear-of-the-blank-page and fill a sketchbook with mixed media and print inspired by the historic town of Rochester.

We’ll start with ideas-gathering from Rochester's architecture and riverside. Back in the studio we’ll discuss ideas and cover tips for starting your sketchbook. We’ll plan colour palettes, talk reoccurring themes and play with mark making, patterns and overlays.

Whilst this course doesn’t directly cover sketching and drawing techniques it’ll give you the space to explore new ways of creating and thinking.

You’ll see your sketchbook quickly fill up, section by section, as you relax into a no-pressure approach to making art.

Sketchbook or art journal, call it what you will, this two-day course promises to kick start your creativity and get you out of a rut.

Your sketchbook and lunches are included but please bring the following with you:

A fully charged phone that you can access the internet with and take photos on. We’ll use the photos you take as reference, so don’t worry if it doesn’t have an amazing camera.

An apron.

A limited selection of the following will be available for you to use but please also bring your own ephemera eg. old letters, maps, old photos, books, stamps, knitting/sewing patterns, interesting packaging, newspaper clippings, fabric, postcards, greetings cards, wallpapers, phone directories, etc.

Objects that could make interesting imprints - bottle tops, corrugated card/plastic, fruit and vegetable nets, ring pulls, feathers, lace and open weave fabric, textured wallpaper, shells etc. use your imagination!

Some nice things workshop attendees have said:

"Great fun and learnt a lot in a short space of time. Rachel is a great teacher and was very patient with all my questions!"

Karen

Course dates: A two-day course running on the following dates:

Monday 13 March 10am - 4pm

Tuesday 14 March 10am - 4pm

About the venue: The course takes place at Studio 7 in The Halpern Conservancy Board Building, on Rochester High Street. This beautiful early 20th century building was purchased by Nucleus Arts in 2019 and lovingly restored to become the home of Café Nucleus, the Halpern POP Gallery and artists’ studios.

Once a dark dreary room, Studio 7 has been completely opened up and boasts huge leaded windows, an original fireplace and beautiful honey-coloured parquet flooring. It’s not your typical art studio, you’ll notice that it has an informal feel - there's a comfy Ercol chair, mohair cushions and rugs with some vintage touches and modern twists thrown in. This sets the scene perfectly for the workshop; I want you to feel relaxed and enjoy experimenting with different forms of print.
